For buyers of a used Volkswagen Tayron exported from China, the DQ381 transmission deserves a different kind of attention from normal DSG discussions.

Chinese owner complaints now provide enough independent cases to answer the first part.
There is a repeated pattern involving sudden transmission emergency mode, loss of specific gears or reverse, and diagnostic findings associated with the mechatronic/clutch-control area. 车质网[1]
What is the DQ381?
Volkswagen currently describes the Tayron as using a DQ381 wet dual-clutch transmission. Volkswagen’s official erWin repair-information system identifies the corresponding repair family as the 7-speed DSG transmission 0GC [DQ381], with transmission codes including 0GC and 0GCA. 大众汽车[3]
That distinction matters because “7-speed DSG” alone is not a sufficient parts identifier.
A gearbox family, a transmission code and the actual hardware fitted to a particular VIN are different levels of identification.
What the real owner cases look like
One 2020 Tayron 330TSI owner reported that a vehicle with only about 30,000 km suddenly displayed a transmission emergency-mode warning while driving. A dealer diagnostic reportedly recorded P175E00. 车质网[1]
A separate 2021 Tayron 330TSI with approximately 48,700 km entered emergency mode and could no longer select reverse. The owner reported an ODIS result of P176F00 and a dealer diagnosis involving the mechatronic unit. 车质网[5]
Another 2020 Tayron 330TSI at 59,794 km repeatedly lost normal gear operation. On the first event the car could use only 2nd, 4th and 6th gears; after temporary reset, the failure returned. The owner states that the dealer diagnosed a transmission pressure-sensor fault. 车质网[2]
A 2019 Tayron 330TSI owner reported an emergency-mode event on the highway at roughly 55,000 km, accompanied by loss of 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th gears and a recorded P173500. 车质网[6]
Another 2019 vehicle entered emergency mode on a highway, lost reverse and showed P176F00 during dealer diagnosis. 车质网[7]
These are separate owner complaints with different vehicles, mileages and complaint numbers.
They are not a controlled engineering study, but their similarity is strong enough to treat emergency mode plus lost gears as a repeated owner-case pattern, not an isolated anecdote.
The lost gears are not always the same
This is important.
Some owners report losing odd gears.
Others report losing even gears or reverse.
A 2021 complaint, for example, describes loss of reverse and 2nd/4th/6th gears together with P173600. 车质网[8]
That means an article should not teach owners:
“If DQ381 fails, it always leaves only 2/4/6.”
The evidence does not support that.
A more accurate rule is:
Emergency mode may disable one clutch-side group of gears, but the exact symptoms and diagnostic result must be read from the individual vehicle.
The diagnostic codes also differ
The repeated cases include codes such as:
P173500;P173600;P175E00;P176F00.
These codes appear in owner-submitted dealer diagnostic descriptions, often together with references to clutch-position sensors, pressure readings or the mechatronic assembly. 车质网[1]
We should not collapse all four into one universal diagnosis.
The useful sequence is:
symptom → actual stored code → dealer/ODIS diagnosis → fitted transmission hardware → repair decision.
Not:
Tayron + emergency mode → buy a mechatronic unit.
One case shows why “just replace the sensor” is not a universal conclusion
A 2019 owner reported a first failure in 2025 and says two pressure sensors were repaired/replaced. The same problem returned about a year later, after which the dealer reportedly found an issue around the sensor soldering area. 车质网[9]
That single case does not prove sensor-only repair is always wrong.
But it does show why buyers should not assume:
“P1735/P176F means one inexpensive sensor and the problem is permanently solved.”
Repair history matters.
What about the often-mentioned TPI 2061782/1?
Many recent Chinese complaints reference an internal document described as TPI 2061782/1.
Owners commonly claim that it covers certain DQ380/DQ381/DQ500 mechatronic faults and provides extended coverage. 车质网[1]
However, there is an important evidence problem.
We have not located a publicly verifiable original FAW-Volkswagen document confirming the exact text, affected VIN range and universal eligibility claimed by owners.
And one 2020 Tayron owner states that after the dealer checked FAW-Volkswagen’s system, he was told his vehicle was not covered; the owner also says customer service did not confirm such coverage for his car. 车质网[2]
Therefore the safe conclusion is:
Chinese owners repeatedly cite TPI 2061782/1, but eligibility for a specific vehicle must be confirmed directly through Volkswagen/FAW-Volkswagen using that vehicle’s VIN.
It should not be presented as a guaranteed policy for every imported Tayron.

Do not confuse this with older Volkswagen DSG recalls
Volkswagen has had transmission/mechatronic campaigns on other DSG families and older models.
That does not automatically prove that these Tayron DQ381 cases are part of the same defect or recall.
The only valid evidence for a specific vehicle is a campaign, service record or manufacturer database result tied to that model/VIN.
Why ordering a DQ381 mechatronic unit by model year is risky
This is where the issue becomes a parts-compatibility problem.
Volkswagen’s own erWin system separates generic DQ381/0GC repair documentation from vehicle identification. Its search interface specifically supports VIN-based lookup for vehicle-specific service information. erWin Online[10]
That is a strong clue about the correct workflow.
Do not start with:
2020 Tayron 330TSI → DQ381 → buy “compatible mechatronic”.
Start with:
VIN → transmission identification → diagnostic codes → original unit label / hardware number → software/hardware revision → candidate replacement part.
For an expensive transmission component, the removed unit’s label can be as important as the model name.
As we showed for the Tayron engine codes, exact vehicle identification is the first step before any version-sensitive order.
Why this matters for Tayron imported into Russia
China-market Tayron are now present in Russia as real used imports. Drom currently lists first-generation cars and real Russian owners, including 2020 330TSI examples. Дром[4]
But the Russian owner sample is still relatively small.
At least one 2020 330TSI Russian owner currently reports the car as economical and without breakdowns, and another real China-import review does not describe a major DSG failure. Дром[4]
So the evidence does not justify:
“DQ381 failures are already widespread among Tayron in Russia.”
What Russia has is something else:
several years of Chinese owner history available before the imported fleet ages further.
That is useful information for inspection.
What to check before buying
For a used China-market Tayron with DQ381, the transmission inspection should include:
1. Scan the gearbox before purchase. 2. Record all current and historical transmission fault codes. 3. Test reverse repeatedly. 4. Check whether all odd and even gears operate normally. 5. Ask whether emergency mode has ever appeared and then disappeared after restart. 6. Check repair invoices for mechatronic or sensor work. 7. Record the transmission and mechatronic-unit identification before ordering parts. 8. Verify any claimed special warranty or TPI against the VIN rather than relying on screenshots from another owner.
The critical warning sign is not ordinary low-speed DSG feel.
It is the history of:
emergency-mode warning + missing gear group/reverse + stored diagnostic fault.

Bottom line
Real Chinese owner cases support the existence of a repeated DQ381 emergency-mode pattern on some Tayron 330TSI vehicles from the 2019–2021 period. 车质网[5]
They do not prove that every DQ381 will fail.
They also do not prove that every P173500, P175E00 or P176F00 requires the same repair.
For an exported China-market Tayron, the practical lesson is simpler:
scan the transmission before buying, preserve the actual diagnostic codes, and identify the installed unit by VIN and hardware label before ordering an expensive mechatronic component.
That is much safer than buying a part because a marketplace listing says:
“Fits Tayron 330TSI DQ381.”
